Factors Affecting Cable Performance and Placement in Cable Routing

2025 07/01

Six major factors that affect cable performance:
1. Ultraviolet (UV) - Do not use cables without UV protection in direct sunlight.

2. Heat - Cables are very hot in metal pipes or trunking, and many polymers will have reduced service life at such temperatures.

3. Water - Moisture in LAN twisted pair cables increases the capacitance of the cable, thereby reducing impedance and causing near-end crosstalk problems.

4. Mechanical damage (repair costs) - Repairing optical cables is very expensive, requiring at least two terminations at each discontinuity.

5. Grounding - If the shield of the cable needs to be grounded, the corresponding standards must be followed.

6. Total route length (not just between buildings) - Use outdoor-grade LAN twisted pair cables between buildings, and the total length must be limited to 90 meters. For 100Mps or 1000Mbps networks, the laying distance cannot exceed this limit. If the laying distance is between 100 meters and 300 meters, optical cable should be selected.
Power Cable

Is the cable placed

1. Under the eaves. The cable can be used as long as it is not directly exposed to sunlight or ultra-high temperature. Standard LAN cables can be used. It is recommended to use pipes.

2. On the exterior wall. Avoid direct sunlight on the wall and man-made damage.

3. In the pipe (plastic or metal). If in the pipe, pay attention to the damage of plastic pipes and the heat conduction of metal pipes.

4. Suspended application/overhead cable. Consider the droop and pressure of the cable. Which bundling method is planned to be used and whether the cable is directly exposed to sunlight.

5. Directly laid in the underground cable trench, this environment has the smallest control range. The installation of the cable trench should be regularly checked for dryness or humidity.

6. Underground pipeline. In order to facilitate future upgrades, cable replacement and isolation from surface pressure and the surrounding environment, auxiliary pipelines are isolated. Auxiliary pipelines are a better method. But don't expect the pipes to stay dry forever, as this will affect your choice of cable type.
